Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is Thuraya?
Thuraya is a regional satellite communication provider offering voice, SMS, tracking, and low-bandwidth data services for marine, land, and aviation sectors.
2. Where does Thuraya have coverage?
Thuraya covers more than 160 countries across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and parts of Australia but does not offer global coverage like Inmarsat or Iridium.
3. Can Thuraya be used for marine tracking?
Yes. Thuraya systems can be used for VMS (Vessel Monitoring System), LRIT, SSAS, or private ship tracking services using GPS and satellite relay.
4. Is Thuraya suitable for voice calls at sea?
Absolutely. Thuraya Marine terminals allow reliable voice calling even in coastal and offshore waters within its coverage zone.
5. What is the data speed of Thuraya IP services?
Thuraya IP+ offers up to 444 kbps on shared bandwidth, making it suitable for low-data applications like emails, messages, or light browsing.
6. What kind of antenna is used for Thuraya?
Marine antennas are directional or fixed-type with GPS and L-band support, installed with proper coaxial cabling and grounding.
7. Can Thuraya be used for SSAS or LRIT?
Yes. With the correct hardware and integration, Thuraya can support SSAS and LRIT alerts as per IMO standards.
8. What is the difference between Thuraya MarineStar and Seagull 5000i?
MarineStar is a voice/SMS terminal with tracking, while Seagull 5000i supports both voice and GmPRS (packet-switched data).
9. How much does Thuraya airtime cost?
Airtime costs are generally lower than Iridium or Inmarsat. Voice is billed per minute, and data is charged per MB or via prepaid bundles.
