1. What is a GMDSS Portable Radio?
It’s a handheld VHF radio certified to meet GMDSS distress communication requirements under SOLAS regulations.
2. Is a GMDSS radio mandatory?
Yes. SOLAS-compliant vessels must carry at least two GMDSS handheld radios in lifeboats or emergency lockers.
3. What’s the difference between regular VHF and GMDSS VHF?
GMDSS radios have emergency batteries, are waterproof, certified by classification societies, and operate on DSC & Ch.16.
4. How long does the emergency battery last?
The sealed primary battery typically lasts 4β5 years in storage and 8 hours in operation once activated.
5. How do I test my GMDSS radio?
Annual functional testing is required using dedicated testing tools and signal checks on Ch.16 and DSC 70.
6. Can the emergency battery be recharged?
No. The emergency battery is single-use and must be replaced once expired. A rechargeable pack is provided for regular use.
7. Do you supply accessories too?
Yes. We offer battery packs, chargers, belt clips, floats, pouches, and waterproof cases.
8. What certificates do your radios carry?
MED (Marine Equipment Directive), Wheelmark, SOLAS compliance, and approvals from IACS societies (DNV, ABS, BV, etc.).
9. Do you perform onboard service?
Yes. We service and test GMDSS radios in UAE, Singapore, Egypt, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and India.
10. How can I get a test certificate?
We provide inspection and testing, and issue annual GMDSS portable radio test certificates valid for Class and Port State audit.
