Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What does SSAS stand for?
SSAS stands for Ship Security Alert System. It silently notifies a shore-based authority during security threats onboard a vessel.
2. Is SSAS mandatory for all ships?
Yes, it is mandatory under SOLAS Chapter XI-2 for cargo ships >500 GT, passenger ships, and mobile offshore units.
3. Where are SSAS alert buttons located?
They are placed in discreet locations like the bridge and captain’s cabin. At least two independent activation points are required.
4. Does the SSAS alert crew onboard?
No. It operates silently so as not to alert intruders, pirates, or terrorists. The message is sent directly to authorities ashore.
5. What communication systems are used?
SSAS uses Inmarsat-C, Iridium, or other GMDSS terminals for sending distress messages with ship identity and position.
6. Who receives SSAS alerts?
Alerts are received by the Company Security Officer (CSO) or national authority designated by the vessel’s flag state.
7. Can you test SSAS without triggering real alerts?
Yes. We perform test mode simulations that don’t transmit real alerts but verify complete functionality for audits.
8. Can you retrofit SSAS on older vessels?
Absolutely. We can integrate SSAS functions with existing satellite terminals or install dedicated standalone units.
9. How often should SSAS be tested?
It should be tested annually or during ISPS/Flag audits. Tests confirm satellite signal strength, alert transmission, and response accuracy.
