With the press of a button, your voice travels via the Iridium® satellite mesh to all radios in the Talkgroup. It’s instantaneous, encrypted, and works everywhere—even indoors with an external antenna. You configure and manage coverage zones (from ~100,000 km² up to ~2,250,000 km²) and Talkgroups via the Iridium Gateway.
1. What is a Talkgroup?
A Talkgroup is a predefined set of radios that receive your ICOM SAT-100 PTT transmissions instantly—up to 15 groups can be configured for different roles or regions.
2. How much does it cost to communicate?
You subscribe to a monthly plan with unlimited PTT usage. Costs vary by coverage zone and service provider—no per‑call charges.
3. Can I use it indoors?
Yes—indoors or in vehicles—but performance improves with line-of-sight to sky or an FA‑S102U external antenna.
4. Does it support voice calling?
No voice calls. It’s Icom SAT-100 PTT-only. But via the optional VE‑PG4 RoIP gateway, you can patch into IP phones and other networks.
5. How do I manage coverage areas?
Coverage zones (up to 5 tiers from small to jumbo) are configured through the Iridium Gateway alongside Talkgroup settings.
6. How secure is the communication?
All voice traffic is encrypted using AES‑256—commonly used in secure government communications.
